Mathews, Virginia is a selected history of the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries centered in what is now known as Mathews County, Virginia, which was created by an act of Virginia’s General Assembly in 1790, which became effective on May 1, 1791. The area was previously part of Gloucester County and known as Kingston Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia.
The story, for the most part, is centered on a small geographical area south of the Mathews courthouse on the east side of the East River, an important neighborhood in the development of the county and in the life of the Hall family for many generations. The principal focus of the genealogical history is on my great-great-great-great-great-grandfather Robert Hall, born circa 1730, and his descendants.
