When I set out to write this book in the spring of 2007, having idle time on my hands from open heart surgery, I wanted to make a record of what country and farm life was like in central Virginia as I remembered it. It covers the years 1936 to 1956. I always kept in mind that the book would be read by young people and urban people who do not have a clue about how farm life was before electricity, tractors, farm machines or paved roads.
