March 8, 1946 - a red letter day for Richmond and Williamsburg, Virginia. On that day, both cities hosted World War II heroes Winston Spencer Churchill, wartime Prime Minister of Great Britain, and General Dwight David Eisenhower, former Supreme Allied Commander of the Allied Expenditionary Force and architect of the D-Day Normandy invasion - together again ten months after the end of their successful united war effort. Having delivered a scheduled address to the joint houses of the Virginia General Assembly in the morning, Churchill, along with Eisenhower, both wives, and other notables, traveled by train to Williamsburg for a tour, a reception at the Raleigh Tavern, and an elaborate dinner at the Williamsburg Inn, hosted by Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeeler, III. For Richmond photographer Frank A. Dementi it was also a red letter day. His coverage of the Churchill-Eisenhower visit, which began at 10:00 A.M., culminated in his being the only photographer invited inside the Raleigh Tavern in Williamsburg to record for posterity, the relaxed reunion of these two men, whose friendship began during World War II but lasted a lifetime. With Frank Dementi's pictures as the focal point, this book uses newspaper accounts and personal recollection to help recreate this red letter day so that, as memories fade, the event will never be forgotten.
